Modica is divided into Modica Alta, perched on rocky cliffs and Modica Bassa nestled in a valley formed by two streams. The historical centre is a web of alleyways, vertiginous stairways, magnificent churches and lavish palaces where one can witness the splendour and historical importance of the city in by gone days. Fascinating for many reasons including its one hundred churches and one hundred bells, this city is one of the greatest expressions of late Sicilian Baroque with the outstanding example being San Giorgio church.

Don’t forget to taste the locally produced chocolate when you visit. In homage to its Spanish heritage, Modica has been producing a granulose type of chocolate for centuries. Using Aztec methods, it is often flavoured with chilli pepper, cinnamon or vanilla.
